I want to see the United States do well. I am very proud of my country. Yes, I want to see President-elect Barack Obama do well, just as I wanted to see George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, etc., do well as our leaders.
Tough times are here. We may look back on this time the way our parents and grandparents look back on the late 1920s and early 1930s.
Part of the plan being put forth in the new congress is to spend our way out of it. Stimulate the economy. Stimulate – the “S” word that we will be hearing more and more of in the future.
I don’t think it will work, but I am not an economist or an accountant or anything close to that and I don’t even play one on TV, but I am a taxpayer.
So, when I read comments that $825 BILLION may not be enough to help with this mess, I cringe at the thought of spending that much money.
After reviewing the proposal one congressman said, “Oh my God!”
Praying to God is probably the best answer in these tough times.

Just a few minutes...
I had to take a few minutes away from commenting on sports to write about the Montana Legislature and same-day voter registration.
A bill (HB 88) was introduced in the Montana Legislature that would make the Friday before the election on Tuesday the last day someone could register to vote. According to this story, it seems that most people who turned out to speak about the bill opposed it. It was dead on arrival. That’s democracy.
I like HB 88. I like the idea of early voting but there should be a cut-off date, sometime before Election Day. The Friday before Election Day would be fine with me.
Although we have not discovered any fraud or corruption with the way it is currently done here in Montana, it seems there are more chances of it by allowing people to register until the polls close on Election Day...and sometimes later if they were already in line when the polls closed.
I think by allowing the election officials an extra couple of days to verify new voter registrations is fine. I won’t get into voter laziness and other things. A commentary posted by JP over at mtpolitics.net says it better than I can. You can read it HERE.
Maybe I’m not alone. An on-line poll on the Great Falls Tribune website today asked this question, “Should same-day registration on Election Day be eliminated?” At the time of this post, "Yes" was leading "No" 61-38 percent. The final results will be listed in the print copy of Thursday’s Tribune.

Pioli to the Chiefs
ESPN is reporting that New England Patriots vice president of player personnel, Scott Pioli, will soon be joining the Kansas City Chiefs to become head of football operations (General Manager).
I say, “Yippee!”
The Patriots have been one of the better teams in the NFL for several years getting to the Super Bowl four times and winning three of them. Hopefully Pioli will bring some of that tradition to Kansas City and put the Chiefs back in the playoffs and their winning ways.

Upsets!
OK, even the most die-hard fans of the NFL were probably scratching their heads this weekend after seeing the upsets.
Before I write about the playoffs, congratulations and thanks to Tony Dungy, who resigned today as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. He was a good guy and a great coach: Six straight twelve win seasons, ten straight playoff appearances, 148 career wins. The first black head coach to win the Super Bowl. Faith, family, and football (in that order) are very important to him, and that is probably the greatest thing a man can have said about his life. If you get a chance, read his book, “Quiet Strength: The Principles, Practices, & Priorities of a Winning Life.”
OK, back to the playoffs. I went 0-4 this weekend. Luckily, I don’t depend on my picks to put food on the table.
To me, seeing Kurt Warner get back to the NFC Championship game is pretty neat. Warner is a true professional. I remember the “greatest show on turf” days. Will the Cards get to the Super Bowl? Nobody thought they had a chance to make it this far and now they have the NFC Championship game at home.
On the other hand, the way Jake Delhomme of the Panthers played was tough to watch. I kept thinking that the next play was going to turn it around for them, but the Cardinals defense played great and Delhomme had his worst game.
The Steelers and Ravens (Part III) should be as good as or better than Parts I and II. Ravens QB Joe Flacco is doing well as a rookie. If the Steelers want to win Part III, they will need to make the Ravens depend on Flacco to win it by stopping the Ravens running game.
Please take part in the poll on the left. Please! Here are my picks to make it to the Super Bowl: Arizona over Philly and the Steelers over the Ravens. Arizona and Pittsburgh will play in the Super Bowl on February 1. Since I was 0-4 this weekend, you might want to pick the opposite of me.
