The Big Show

After watching Texas squeak by Ohio State last night (that was a great game) and getting ready to watch the GMAC Bowl tonight, Ball State (12-1) vs. Tulsa (10-3), my thoughts turn to "The Big Show” on Thursday night, where we’ll get to see which team wins the BCS National Championship, the Florida Gators (12-1) or the Oklahoma Sooners (12-1).

The tough and defensive-minded Southeastern Conference takes on the pass-happy spread offense of the Big 12. I am fan of Big 12 football!

Every major college football team wanted to get into the Big Show – the BCS Championship game. Although there are many problems with the way the teams are selected to play in the BCS, we should have a great game.

Of course, Texas, USC, and Utah feel they should be there, too. Utah is 13-0. Texas and USC are 12-1.

Florida was beaten at home by Mississippi (9-4) 31-30 back in September. Oklahoma was beaten by Texas (12-1) in October 45-35. That game was played in Dallas. Yes, Texas beat Oklahoma but it was “early” in the season.

Last year’s Heisman trophy winner, Florida’s Tim Tebow, and this year’s winner, Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford, play. This should be a good game. Both of these quarterbacks are fine young men and wise beyond their years.

Oklahoma has scored 61 or more points in their last five games. Three of those games were against ranked teams. Since their loss, Florida has averaged around 49 points a game.

So, it should be a defensive struggle, right? Or will it be the team that has the ball last wins?

According to over 240,000 voters on ESPN.com, Florida is favored to win the game. I’ve seen Oklahoma destroy some great teams this year, but Florida has a better defense than most of the teams the Sooners have played. I think it will be a close game, but defense wins championships, so I am going with Florida, 28-24.

January 10-11

The Divisional playoff weekend in the NFL is my favorite weekend during the NFL playoffs.

On Saturday, we have the Ravens at the Titans and the Cardinals at the Panthers. On Sunday, we have the Eagles at the Giants and the Chargers at the Steelers.

Wow. Good games. My picks have been all over the place this year so I have no idea which teams will win this weekend. The Ravens are looking very tough and the Chargers are surging as well as the Eagles. Will the week off be good or bad for the Titans, the Giants and the Steelers. The Cardinals had trouble visiting the East coast during the regular season, so the Panthers should be favored to win that game.

Last weekend the Saturday games were good. Both decided by six points. The big play in the Chargers/Colts game came when the Colts could not get a first down when they had third and two to go with a little over two minutes left. Manning was sacked and the Colts had to punt. The Chargers tied the game a few seconds later. They won the coin toss in overtime (OT) and took the ball down the field to score the winning TD. The Colts never had possession of the ball in OT.

The NFL may need to take a look at changing how overtime is played to make it more enjoyable for the viewers, but I believe the statistics show that the team that wins the coin toss does not necessarily always win the game. On Saturday, the NFL’s Most Valuable Player (Peyton Manning) never touched the ball in overtime.

The Conference Championships will be on Sunday, January 18. Then two weeks after that we have the Super Bowl (February 1). NBC will televise the game. Al Michaels and John Madden will have the call.
