Two National Championship Games!

The Montana Grizzlies beat the James Madison Dukes at their house tonight 35-27.

Next up, the National Championship game in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Friday night (December 19).

The game became a nail-biter late and the Griz defense had to make a stop for them to get to the big show. Congratulations Griz!

Next Friday night, and then on Saturday (December 20), two Montana teams (Montana Grizzlies and the Carroll College Saints) will play for national championships in their respective divisions. Nice.

Casual Dress Friday

Football, football, FOOTBALL!

Friday Night Football

The Montana Grizzlies play the James Madison Dukes tonight for a spot in the Football Bowl Subdivision Championship game. The game will be telecast on ESPN2 at 6:00 p.m. Montana time. Go Griz!

Richmond plays at Northern Iowa in the other semi-final game on Saturday.

More Playoff Football

Northwest Missouri State (13-1) plays for the Division II National Championship on Saturday against Minnesota Duluth (14-0). This game will be on ESPN2 at 11:00 a.m. Montana time.

Wisconsin Whitewater plays Mary Hardin-Baylor and Wheaton College plays Mount Union in the semi-finals of the Division III playoffs on Saturday.

Heisman Trophy

Saturday night, we’ll get to see who wins this year’s Heisman Trophy. Sam Bradford (Oklahoma), Colt McCoy (Texas) and Tim Tebow (Florida) are the finalists. All are quarterbacks. Tebow won last year and if he wins again, he will join Ohio State running back, Archie Griffin, as the only two-time winner. Tebow was the first sophomore to win. It should be a close vote, but I think Sam Bradford will win it.

History

ESPN is airing “The Greatest Game Ever Played” on Saturday night. This is the 50th Anniversary of the 1958 NFL Championship game between the New York Giants and the Baltimore Colts, and it was the first game to go into sudden death overtime. The game was played at Yankee Stadium. A couple of men were offensive and defensive coordinators for the Giants at that time. The Offensive Coordinator was Vince Lombardi and the Defensive Coordinator was Tom Landry. Many historians believe this was when the NFL started gaining popularity. The game was televised nationwide on NBC.

Looking ahead to Sunday

There are a couple of good games (on paper) in the NFL this Sunday. Pittsburgh plays at Baltimore. This should be a black and blue game. We probably won’t see this game in Montana as Denver plays Carolina at the same time. The New York Giants play at Dallas Sunday night. Tennessee, Arizona, and the NY Giants are the only teams that have clinched playoff spots.

Holy Cow! $161 million

“Holy Cow” would be what the late Chicago Cubs broadcaster, Harry Caray, would be saying about pitcher CC Sabathia being on the verge of signing seven year, $161 million deal, to pitch for the New York Yankees.

That’s a cool $23 million per season. In the worst of economic times, this 28 year old is about to sign the largest contract ever for a pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB) history. Baseball. In comparison, Yankee’s infielder Alex Rodriguez made $28 million last season and Derek Jeter made $21.6 million.

Sabathia’s lifetime Earned Run Average (ERA) is 3.66. He has won 117 games and lost 73 in his seven year career.

Is this a great country or what? Teachers, police officers, and firefighters make $30, $40, or $60 thousand a year, while men playing a game make millions.

Follow-up: Sad. Tragic. Dumb.

I wrote about this on April 30, 2008. You can read those comments HERE.

Yesterday, the final sentence was handed down. According to this story in the Billings Gazette, the sentence is 15 years with five suspended.

Bowling 2008-09

Get ready! It looks like there are 34 bowl games starting on December 20 and ending on January 8, 2009, so that means 68 college teams were invited to go bowling this year. Several 6-6 teams are going to bowl games.

There are five bowl games each on December 31 and January 1. Whoa. Overdose.

In the 10 team Bowl Championship Series (BCS) system, the team ranked number one (Oklahoma) and the team ranked number two (Florida) play each other. That is good. Number three (Texas) does not play number four (Alabama) and so on. That is not good. One would think we could at least see the format of one versus two, three versus four, etc. That’s not to say there won’t be great games, but it would be nice to see the top ten teams play each other. They don’t do this because the football conferences have sweet deals with certain bowl committees.

I know I have said this before, but wouldn’t it be great to see the top eight or 16 teams in the BCS standings play each other in a playoff like they do in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and the NAIA? If there were 16 teams, the two teams that meet in the final game would have played an extra four games ending the same week as the BCS National Championship game. If there were eight teams, the final two teams would play an extra three games.

We have the BCS system because of money it generates for the schools that make it into the BCS. There’s a $17 million payout per game for participating in one of the five BCS games. Just imagine if that much money was paid for every round of a playoff for the top eight or 16 teams who make the big show? I would imagine there would be many teams lining up for a playoff system because money talks.

Montana: Still Two Teams Left

Saturday was a great day to watch football. To heck with the chores and the errands, it was football all day! Many Montana football fans were torn between watching the Griz and the Saints play. Both played at the same time on Saturday and both teams came out with victories. My remote was working overtime.

The Saints

The Saints’ game was a nail biter. The Lindenwood Lions came from 21 points down and the game was not decided until there was about 38 seconds left when, after driving 99 yards for a touchdown, they went for two (and the win). Gutsy call. The ball hit a Carroll player in the back and bounced to the ground. It was probably a long flight back to Eastern Missouri for the Lions, but they played a heck of a game. The Saints (13-0) now play for the NAIA National Championship against the University of Sioux Falls (South Dakota) (13-0) Cougars on December 20 in Rome, Georgia. This is a rematch of last year's title game, won by the Saints. The kickoff is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Montana time. We have an extra week to prepare for the Championship game!

The Griz

The Montana Grizzlies beat the Weber State Wildcats 24-13 in a quarterfinal game of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) on Saturday afternoon. The Griz started well and overall the team played one of their better games.

This Friday night the Griz play the James Madison Dukes in Harrisonburg, Virginia, at 6:00 pm Montana time (ESPN2). This is a semifinal game. In the other semifinal game, Richmond travels to Northern Iowa for a 2:00 pm (Montana time) Saturday game (ESPN).

It seems the Grizzlies received a bad deal here because they have to travel farther and play Friday night instead of Saturday. The schedulers for the NCAA FCS should have given the Griz the extra day and had Northern Iowa and Richmond play Friday night. But, if the Griz win they get an extra day off before the championship game on December 19.
